DIM TO WARM: WHAT IS DIM TO WARM LIGHTING?

It used to be that when you dimmed a traditional light bulb, the light became warmer. With LED lighting, this works differently. When it is dimmed, the intensity of the light changes but the colour of the light does not. Unless you buy a light product that incorporates both warm white and functional white LEDs. Light sources that can be switched from both cool white to warm white light are called tunable white or dim to warm. But what exactly is ‘dim to warm’ lighting, what is the best use for dim to warm and which products do we recommend for a nice dim to warm effect? In this blog, we will go deeper into the world of dim to warm LED lighting.

WHAT IS DIM TO WARM LIGHTING?

What exactly is dim to warm led lighting? When you are looking for lighting for your home, you will undoubtedly come across the term ‘dim to warm’. Dim to warm is becoming more and more common. This dim to warm LED lighting means that when you dim the light, you not only reduce the light intensity but also change the colour of the light to warmer light: just like the traditional light bulb. A light source with ‘dim to warm’ therefore means that when it is dimmed the colour temperature becomes warmer and warmer during dimming. You may not notice it immediately but depending on the time of day and certain moment of daylight, you need different light.

During the day you need more and more functional light. In the evening you need dimmed light in a warmer colour temperature. Light sources with “dim to warm” light are ideal for displaying the light you need at that moment.  In addition to choosing the right light source, the position of the light source in the house is also crucial. A lighting plan can be very helpful here. It prescribes in which position and which type of light source should be placed!

DIM TO WARM: WHAT ABOUT THE COLOUR TEMPERATURE?

First, it is good to explain what we mean by ‘colour temperature’. Colour temperature is not measured in Celsius, but in Kelvin. The higher the colour temperature the cooler the light. 5600K is seen as daylight, 3000K is often seen as warm white light, but personally we find this light still too cool.  At 2300K a 2000K you get the super warm candle white light. Light sources with Dim to white such as the unique Glareless pin spot give at the brightest setting 4000 Kelvin of light.

As soon as it is dimmed the light becomes warmer up to 2300K. Then this spot gives the warmest light and is dimmed the deepest. Super atmospheric! If you do not want to combine dimming with the warm light and therefore want to use your 100% capacity (i.e., undimmed) warm white light or cool white light, this is also possible. We call this ‘tunable white’. The light sources are then adjusted differently.

IN WHICH PLACES IN THE HOUSE IS DIM TO WARM SUITABLE?

To illuminate the house well and beautifully starts with a well-thought-out lighting plan. Unfortunately, we still see too often that the light is the final expense and people only think about the light when the electricity wires are drawn, and the ceilings are plastered. Making a lighting plan is a profession and is often an underestimated job. It is not easy to think of how each room can be illuminated well and attractively and which combination of light sources are required for this. Due to its multifunctional character, dim to warm LED is a perfect choice for your home.

For example, you can choose dim to warm recessed spotlights. These have a modern and stylish character and can firmly illuminate your home when needed, but also provide a warm atmosphere when you host a cozy dinner. DYDELL’s dual white glareless pin spot can be adjusted as a dim to warm recessed spot. These recessed spots are known for their high quality, the glare-free invisible light and their minimalist and modern look that can be trimmed into a ceiling. This pin spot has a pin-opening of only 10 millimeters. This ensures that you are not blinded when you look into the room. So, it is very functional, but at the same time creates a clean and quiet ceiling from which, fine soft and “invisible” light comes

DIM TO WARM LIGHTING ABOVE THE DINING TABLE

Dim to warm is also a very suitable choice for dining table lighting. Think of the DYDELL SMART LED sphere. With this dim to warm LED lamp, you can really go either way. With the push of a button, you can change the dining table where homework was done into an atmospheric dining table by means of the light. This unique composition allows you to create a true wow-effect with the luxurious lighting of the DYDELL LED sphere! In addition to the Dual White LED Bulb, this bulb is also available in a version where the top, in addition to white light, is also equipped with changeable coloured light. This allows the ceiling to be illuminated in a perfectly atmospheric way while the table remains functionally lit. It is also possible to have both half-spheres fitted with white light and changeable coloured light. For professional spaces such as entrances, theater foyer etc. this can give an extra atmospheric effect.

The LED sphere is also used as “mood-bomb” for the hospitality industry. But also at home it can give a special twist to your interior. We therefore call it our atmosphere bomb! In addition, dim to warm is suitable for the dining table because people may not only eat there. For example, dining tables are often used as a home office, a place to play games and a place to read books. It is then advisable to create a somewhat more functional light for these activities. With dim to warm, you just turn the light to the brightest setting with the most functional colour temperature and voila!
