(ELDERLY) CARE LIGHTING

Sufficient light and the right light have a positive effect on the wellbeing and the quality of life of elderly. In addition, bio dynamic lighting stimulates the day and night rhythms of older people. With the powerful, diffuse, dynamic light of DYDELL the appropriate light can easily be called up per activity.

INFLUENCE OF LIGHT ON THE BIOLOGICAL CLOCK OF ELDERLY PEOPLE

Infirmity of old age unfortunately also means that eyesight decreases as the age increases. Both the lens and the cornea of older people become darker and more yellow and the pupils become smaller. In addition to the fact that the eyesight deteriorates, it has become clear that the reduced incidence of light on the retina during the daytime has an adverse effect on the maintenance of the sleep-wake rhythm. Over time, regulating the 24-hour rhythm of the human body deteriorates, especially in older people with dementia. A shortage of light stimuli disrupts the biological clock, i.e. the 24-hour rhythm of elderly which causes them to disorientate more quickly. A proper lighting ensures “better vision” and good control of the biological clock.

“We were commissioned to take care of the entire interior design for the new care institutions to be opened in Bloemendaal and Son & Breugelreugel. Since “light” is a discipline in its own right, we hired DYDELL for this. Based on our interior design plan, DYDELL has drawn up a calculated lighting plan, which meets the lighting requirements applicable for elderly care. We prescribed the fixtures, DYDELL incorporated their light sources with a control system. The common areas have become wonderful and the lighting certainly contributes to this a lot. It gives atmosphere and at the same time there is enough light to have dinner or an activity. The cooperation went well, and we are proud of the results achieved”.

DYDELL (BIO)DYNAMIC LIGHTING SYSTEM

Our light sources are successfully used in healthcare institutions, because they produce a lot of diffuse light and have a high colour fastness (RA95). In addition, they produce dynamic light (so both functional and decorative light in one light source), as a result of which – depending on the time of day, or on the alternating functions of a space – the right light can easily be called up and thus the day/night rhythm can be stimulated.

DID YOU KNOW

  • On average, young people and adults expose themselves to light for 1 to 5 hrs per day to light with an intensity of more than 2000 lux? In the case of elderly this is reduced to 1 hour a day and in the case of dementia patients in a nursing home to as little as 1.6 minutes (source: BTSG).
  • Elderly need three to five times more light than young people?
  • Due to a lack of light stimuli, the biological clock, i.e. the 24-hour rhythm of older people is disrupted, and they become disorientated more quickly. As a result, the risk of “falling” among this group is considerably high.
  • Do colours have a positive effect on the wellbeing and orientation of older people? Warm colours encourage a feeling of safety and harmony and can therefore help with feelings of loneliness and anxiety.

CALCULATED LIGHTING PLAN: HE WHO IS WELL PREPARED HAS HALF WON THE BATTLE

In order to comply with the strict requirements of “good lighting for seniors” we always recommend starting with a calculated lighting plan. Based on the interior design plan or the existing set up we make a “spot plan” of light which enables us to know exactly where the type of light source is to be installed. This way the lighting plan prescribes the type of light source for (spot, wall lamp, pendant lamp etc.) and the amount of lumen output to be produced. What type of wall lamp or pendant lamp is ultimately incorporated can be determined depending on taste and budget. By illuminating your elderly care location with a lighting plan, you can be sure that you get a balanced lighting image that meets the strict requirements of “lighting for older people”.
